Customized Equipment Solutions to Optimize Your Packaging and Converting Operations

MGF Services & Equipment has been a trusted partner in the packaging, converting, and bagging industries for over 40 years. Our team of engineers and technicians has the experience and knowledge to provide customized equipment solutions that enhance efficiency and productivity.

Why Choose MGF Services & Equipment

When you choose MGF for your project, you get a partner who is invested in your success with the following approach:

  • We take the time to understand your unique requirements and goals to create customized solutions
  • Our engineering team offers innovative designs to improve your operations
  • We work collaboratively with your personnel through trails to ensure that desired results are achieved
  • New equipment is manufactured with premium materials for longevity
  • We recover and upgrade existing equipment whenever possible to save on costs
  • We provide ongoing parts, maintenance, and tooling support to optimize uptime

One example of a custom solution we engineered is an improved bag roll design that more than doubled the lifespan for one of our bagging customers.

The Challenge: Worn-Out Bag Rolls Causing Wrinkles & Excessive Waste

Our customer uses top and bottom side bag rolls to provide traction and to evenly guide the substrate for producing square bottom bags. The knurled pattern on the rolls wore down over time causing uneven surfaces which resulted in wrinkles in the substrate, misregister printing, and produced excessive waste – all of which drained profitability. They needed a way to increase the longevity of their rolls.

The Solution: An Innovative Coating Design to Eliminate Premature Wear

Our engineering team went to work to analyze sample worn rolls provided by our customer. We tested various coating options and thicknesses to determine the best combinations to achieve high wear resistance and improved traction. The result was a custom formulated coating that more than doubled the lifespan of the rolls on multiple machines without any deviation in size.

The Benefits Derived Include:

  • Increase lifespan by 2.5 times
  • Provide a smoother surface to prevent perforating
  • Offer even wear to maintain precision
  • Prevent wrinkles and misregister printing
  • Reduce waste to improve yields
  • Can be used in a trial period to meet your unique needs
  • Rolls can be recovered over time and have the original roll converted as spare parts

We collaborated closely with the customer through trials at their facility. This ensured the redesigned rolls met their specific needs before going into full production. The customer was able to realize substantial savings on their ROI from reduced waste and extended time between roll replacements.

Customized Equipment Solutions to Meet Your Needs

Like the bag rolls solution, our team can assess your equipment challenges and design innovative upgrades to enhance performance. We manufacture new equipment to your specifications and can also refurbish existing equipment. Our capabilities include:

  • Full design, engineering, and manufacturing services
  • Precision machining and fabrication
  • Specialized coatings and plating
  • Equipment rebuilding and recovering

Case Study: Reconditioned Anvil Rollers for Food Packaging Industry

anvil rollers

Pictured here are Anvil Rolls that have direct contact with diamond perf rollers. Over time, they create a perforated pattern that is transferred to the anvils, which causes a problem in the substrate.

MGF Services provided a coating that enhanced the original surface to extend the life of the Anvil and saved the customer from having to make a huge investment by buying new.

MGF Services’s coatings have provided multiple solutions to similar projects with big cost savings.

Case Study: Embossed Chill Roller – Textured Random Pattern Coating

Embossed Chill Roller - Textured Random Pattern Coating

Our customer wanted to have an alternative surface option that would create a similar pattern to that which is produced by an engraving process. The following are the steps we took for a successful outcome:

  • The MGF Services team started out with the customer’s engraved pattern sample.
  • We matched the engraved sample with coatings to produce a strikingly similar pattern.
  • Model lab rolls were created for pretesting the random pattern coating to gain client approval.
  • We worked closely with the OEM for our coating preparation for the fabrication of the chill rollers.
  • Completed (3) 30″ Diameter Chill Rolls x 132″ with our random textured coating.

This project was a huge success. The customer was very pleased with the pattern and the cost savings. The 30″ Chill Rolls have been running since 2018 and working as expected. This is one of many projects where MGF Services has made an impact on the packaging and converting industries.

Partnership Success Pays Off!

Hi everyone! Happy 4th of July. During these uncertain times, I feel we need a reason to celebrate even more than ever this year. I’d love to hear your success stories. Here’s one of ours to get us started.
No matter what type of planned maintenance project you have, if you don’t have a good schedule it will fail. MGF Services is no stranger when it comes to planning a time table for a pre-planned maintenance project.

One of our recent projects was recovering 30+ ink metering rolls for a Sunday 2000 press with our Rilsan coating. This project started off with some flexible dates for completion but as we got closer to the start, the timeframe for delivery became very tight due to shifting schedules of personnel needed to install the ink metering rolls.

Working backwards from the customer’s deadline date for installation to get the press up and running, we sent partial orders to keep the installers moving without interruption.

At the end of the project, we were actually ahead by 2 weeks which in the Printing Industry world means Big Payoff $$. The customer was very satisfied with our cooperative planning and high-quality services.

Keys to Successful Maintenance Project Schedule

  • Determine your planned maintenance project workforce needs.
  • Review and analyze any current backlog of projects to establish a reasonable realistic schedule for the planned maintenance project.
  • Calculate tasks needed for each activity phase including materials, tools, etc.
  • Planned downtime. Understand the best time to consider the maintenance project based on the size and duration in order to minimize impacts on production runs.
  • Flexibility. Unforeseen events will always happen. Make sure you respond quickly and react with an alternate plan that will reduce risk.

“A well-designed maintenance schedule allows you to increase the equipment lifetime and reduce long-term maintenance costs.”

MGF Services & Equipment would like to celebrate your next “Success Story,” let’s get started!
